Indexation

Also known as: indexing, being indexed

Indexation is whether your pages are present in the index that an answer engine retrieves from. Many AI assistants draw on a search index, such as Bing behind ChatGPT, so if your page is not indexed there, it cannot be retrieved or cited no matter how good it is.

Indexation is whether your pages actually live in the index an answer engine draws from. It is easy to focus on writing great content and forget the prerequisite: the engine can only surface pages it has crawled, processed, and stored. If a page is not indexed, it is invisible to retrieval, and therefore to citation, regardless of quality.

Why it is the hidden gate

Several AI assistants do not maintain a fresh copy of the whole web. They lean on an existing search index. ChatGPT, for example, has drawn heavily on Bing. That means being indexed in the underlying search engine is a precondition for being retrievable at answer time. The retrieval-augmented generation step can only pull from what is indexed, so indexation sits upstream of every other visibility effort.

Common reasons you are not indexed

Most cases trace back to a handful of causes.

Check by searching a quoted sentence from the page in the underlying index. If it is missing, retrieval never gets a chance. See is my website a source for ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

What does indexation mean for AI answers?

It means being present in the index the AI engine pulls from. Some assistants lean on an existing search index, so if your page is not in that index, the engine has no way to retrieve it. Indexation is the gate before retrieval and citation.

Why would a good page not be indexed?

Common reasons include a robots.txt block, content that only loads with JavaScript, thin or duplicate pages, or simply being new and not yet crawled. Each keeps the page out of the index, and out of AI answers.

How do I check if my page is indexed?

Search for a distinctive sentence from the page, wrapped in quotes, on the relevant search engine. Since some assistants use Bing, checking Bing indexing is a useful proxy for whether ChatGPT can retrieve the page.
