Sample data
In short
Local business AI visibility is how often AI assistants name your business when people ask for a service in your area, like “best roofer in Philadelphia”. Rankry tracks it for local businesses: many of your prompts carry your location, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and Meta Muse get that location when they answer, as do Google’s AI surfaces (on Pro or with Base add-ons) and Copilot, and the rivals they name are pinned on a map.
Where to start
How do I get my local business recommended by ChatGPT?
Start by finding out whether it already is. Think about what a homeowner types when a storm takes shingles off the roof: “best roofer in Philadelphia”, “emergency roof repair Philadelphia”, “how much does a roof replacement cost in Philadelphia”. Then check who AI names for each, on each engine, and why.
When ChatGPT searches the web for a local question, it reads pages about businesses in that area: directories, review sites, local news, neighborhood forums and the businesses’ own sites. Businesses described clearly and consistently, with their services, service area and reviews easy to find, are easier to recommend. The reason Rankry stores for each business in an answer often says exactly why a rival was picked.
Then improve what AI reads: your own pages for each service and area, your listings and reviews on the sites the answers cite, and mentions in local coverage. Check again after each report.
How it works
How does Rankry track AI visibility for a local business?
Local tracking starts at setup and carries through every report.
- 01
Choose Local at setup
Pick “Local” as your business model and enter your location: in the US, a state or ZIP code; elsewhere, a city and postal code.
- 02
Get location-aware prompts
Rankry writes your starting prompts from your site, and at least half of them carry your location, more when you give a ZIP code.
- 03
Each engine gets your location
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok are told where the buyer is asking from, and Meta Muse gets it as an approximate location for its web search. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are captured for your country or state, and Copilot’s Bing search gets the same approximate location.
- 04
Competitors found from answers
After your first report, Rankry picks the businesses AI names that compete for the same customers. You can add or remove them.
- 05
Rivals on a map
Tracked competitors with an address are pinned “On the map” in each prompt’s panel, and Settings shows “Competitor locations” once enough of them have one.
- 06
Read every answer
Each prompt shows who is named, in what order and why, which sources were cited, and the full answer for every new run.
Prompt ideas
How do I track “best [service] in [city]” prompts?
Write the questions people ask when they need you now, when they compare, and when they check prices. Here are starting points by trade, with Philadelphia as the example city.
| Business | Prompts to track |
|---|---|
| Roofer | “best roofer in Philadelphia”, “emergency roof repair Philadelphia”, “roof replacement cost Philadelphia”, “flat roof contractor South Philly” |
| Dentist | “best dentist in Philadelphia for kids”, “emergency dentist open Saturday Philadelphia”, “dental implants cost Philadelphia” |
| Plumber | “24 hour plumber Philadelphia”, “best plumber for old row homes in Philadelphia”, “water heater replacement Philadelphia” |
| HVAC | “same day AC repair Philadelphia”, “best heat pump installer in Philadelphia”, “furnace replacement cost Philadelphia” |
| Lawyer | “best personal injury lawyer in Philadelphia”, “Philadelphia landlord tenant attorney”, “how much does a divorce lawyer cost in Pennsylvania” |
| Restaurant | “best brunch in Fishtown”, “BYOB restaurants in Philadelphia”, “where to get a cheesesteak near Center City” |
Prompts can be up to 200 characters. Add them with “Add prompts” on the Prompts page, or import a CSV.
Location
Do AI results differ by location?
Yes. The same question can bring up different businesses depending on where it is asked from, and the place named in the prompt often matters most. That is why Rankry sends your location with every answer: chat engines get it as a sentence saying where the buyer is asking from.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are captured from Google’s live results, on desktop, for your country or for your state and country. Rankry doesn’t send a ZIP code to Google, so neighborhood-level differences in Google’s AI answers aren’t measured. Putting the neighborhood in the prompt text is the way to test it.
AI Volume and Volume, the demand figures next to each prompt, are measured at country level. They help you compare prompts, but they don’t tell you how many people in your city ask.
Signals
What do AI engines look at for local recommendations?
Rankry doesn’t score these signals, but you can see their effect in the answers, reasons and sources it records.
Your own site
A clear page for each service and area you cover, with your name, address and phone number the same everywhere.
Reviews
Answers often mention ratings and review counts when they explain a pick. Read the reason given beside each business.
Directories and listings
Local directories and review platforms show up as sources for many local prompts. Check which ones your answers cite.
Local coverage
Local news, neighborhood blogs and “best of” lists give AI independent mentions to rely on.
Consistency
The same business name, services and service area across your site and listings make you easier to describe.
Google’s own data
Google’s AI surfaces draw on Google’s results, so keep your Google Business Profile complete. Rankry doesn’t read or score it.
Scope
What Rankry does and doesn’t do for local businesses
Rankry measures AI answers. It isn’t a map-pack tracker or a listings manager.
- Tracks prompts that carry your city or neighborhood across the AI engines on your plan.
- Sends your location to each engine when it answers.
- Finds the local rivals AI names and pins tracked ones on a map.
- Shows the sources AI cites for your local prompts.
- Doesn’t track Google Maps or local-pack rankings.
- Doesn’t run geo-grid scans across neighborhoods.
- Doesn’t read or manage your Google Business Profile or reviews.
- Measures demand figures at country level, not by city.
Local SEO
Is local SEO still important with AI search?
Yes. The basics of local SEO, accurate listings, real reviews, clear service pages and local mentions, are much of what AI engines can read when they answer a local question. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of Google’s own results, and chat engines search the web for the same kinds of pages.
What changes is the shape of the result. A map pack shows several businesses side by side. An AI answer often names a few, explains why, and moves on. Being one of those names, and being described the right way, is the new goal, and it needs its own measurement next to your rankings.

Related features
How does ChatGPT choose local businesses like roofers or dentists?
When it searches the web, ChatGPT reads pages about businesses in the area, such as directories, review sites, local news and company websites, and tends to name the ones that fit the question and are described clearly and consistently. Rankry shows which businesses it named, in what order, the reason it gave for each, and the sources behind the answer.
Do Google reviews affect AI recommendations?
Reviews often come up in AI answers about local services, and review platforms often appear among the sources. Rankry doesn’t read or score your reviews, but the reason AI gives for each business and the sources it cites show how much reviews shape the answers for your prompts.
Does my Google Business Profile matter for AI search?
It likely matters most for Google’s own AI surfaces, AI Overviews and AI Mode, which sit on top of Google’s results. Keep it complete and consistent with your website. Rankry tracks what those AI answers say for your prompts but doesn’t read or manage your profile.
Does Rankry track Google Maps or the local pack?
No. Rankry tracks AI answers: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Meta Muse, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Copilot. It doesn’t track map rankings or run geo-grid scans.
How precise is the location Rankry uses?
Chat engines get a sentence saying where the buyer is asking from, built from your city, state and country. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are captured for your country, or your state and country; Rankry doesn’t send a ZIP code to Google. To test a neighborhood, put it in the prompt.
Can I track more than one location?
Each project has one location. A business with several locations can set up a project for each one, within the number of projects your plan allows. Prompts in any project can also name other towns or neighborhoods in their text.
Will Rankry find my local competitors?
Yes. After your first report, Rankry looks at the businesses AI named that have a website, checks which ones compete for the same customers, and adds them to your tracked competitors up to your plan’s limit. You can add other businesses that appeared in your reports, or remove any of them.
Why aren’t all my competitors on the map?
The map shows tracked competitors with an address Rankry could place. The prompt panel’s “On the map” shows the tracked competitors that answer named, and the “Competitor locations” map in Settings appears once at least half of your competitors have an address.
Is the search volume next to my prompts for my city?
No. AI Volume and Volume are measured for your country. Use them to compare prompts with each other, not as a count of local searches.
What prompts should a local business track first?
Three kinds: urgent needs (“emergency roof repair Philadelphia”), choices (“best roofer in Philadelphia”, “top rated roofing company near me”) and price (“roof replacement cost Philadelphia”). Then add a few for the neighborhoods you want more work in.
