Sample data

In short

Copilot rank tracking is measuring how often your brand is named in answers grounded in Bing web search, and in what position. In Rankry, Copilot uses Azure GPT with Bing web search through Microsoft’s official API. Rankry stores the full answer for every run and reports visibility, position, sentiment, the links cited and the competitors named instead of you.

What it means

What does Copilot brand visibility mean?

Copilot visibility is several measurements, not one. Each answers a different question about how a buyer who gets an answer grounded in Bing hears about you.

Mention

Your brand is named in the Copilot answer. Visibility is the share of Copilot answers to your prompts that name you.

Position

Where you sit among the brands Copilot names, in the order the answer ranks or presents them. #1 is the first brand named.

Source

A web page the answer draws on or links to. Your site can be a source while Copilot recommends someone else, and you can be named without being cited.

Sentiment

The tone of each answer about you, labelled Positive, Neutral or Negative from the specific claims Copilot makes about your brand.

Share of voice

Your mentions as a share of all mentions of you and the competitors you track. It shows who Copilot names most among your rivals.

Who wins the prompt

The brands Copilot names instead of you, how often and in what position. Any of them can become a tracked competitor in one click.

Why Copilot is different

What makes Copilot answers different?

Copilot in Rankry is a GPT model on Azure that searches with Bing. These parts of the setup shape its answers, and they are why it gets its own column instead of being folded into ChatGPT.

Bing is the search index

The web search behind these answers is Bing’s. A page Bing has not indexed is unlikely to be found and cited, however well it ranks on Google.

A GPT model with different search

The model is a GPT model, but it runs on Azure and searches with Bing, so the same prompt can name different brands here and in ChatGPT. Rankry keeps them as separate engines.

Sources are the links it cites

Rankry stores the links cited in the answer as sources. Pages the search retrieved but the answer did not cite are not counted as sources.

A fresh request every run

Each prompt goes through Microsoft’s official API as its own request, with no account, memory or chat history, so changes between runs reflect the model and the web.

What Rankry tracks

What does Rankry track in Copilot?

Each run records the full answer for every prompt, then breaks it down so you can see movement, not just a snapshot.

  • Whether Copilot names your brand, prompt by prompt
  • Your position when you are named
  • Sentiment of every answer: Positive, Neutral or Negative
  • The brands Copilot names instead of you, with its reasons
  • The links cited in the answer, from Bing web search
  • The full answer text for every new run
  • Every run kept in prompt history, per engine
  • Share of voice against your tracked competitors
  • Gaps turned into an Action plan and Tasks

Metrics

Which Copilot visibility metrics does Rankry report?

These are the numbers in the product, how each is calculated and what it tells you. Every one can be read for Copilot alone or next to the other eight engines.

MetricWhat it meansWhy it matters
VisibilityShare of Copilot answers to your prompts that name your brand. Each answer counts once, whatever your position in it.Your baseline. If the engine rarely names you, work on coverage before position or tone.
PositionYour average rank in Copilot answers that name you. Lower is better: #1 means you are named first.People read answers top-down. Being the fifth of six brands rarely wins the click.
Share of voiceYour mentions divided by the mentions of you plus your tracked competitors. The Compete page can split it by engine.Shows whether you are gaining or losing ground against the specific brands you compete with.
SentimentShare of answers naming you whose claims about you read mostly positive. Every answer also gets a Positive, Neutral or Negative chip.A mention that comes with a caveat or an outdated fact can cost more than it earns.
DiversityHow many of the engines you run name you at least once, out of all engines run.Tells you whether Copilot is one of the engines you are missing from, or one you already win.
SourcesThe domains Copilot answers cite in your current report, typed You, Competitor, Review, Forum, Reference or Editorial, with status Yours, Gap or Mixed.Gap sources cite competitors and not you: a concrete list of places to earn a mention.
Head-to-headYour win rate against one tracked competitor on the prompts where you both appear, judged by average position.Tells you which rival to work on first, and on which prompts they beat you.

Monitoring over time

How often should I check my Copilot visibility?

Often enough to catch a change, not so often that you chase noise. Rankry runs on a schedule and keeps every run, so you always compare like with like.

Daily, 3-day or 7-day monitoring

Reports refresh automatically every day, or every 3 or 7 days if you choose, and the dashboard shows the last update and the next scan.

Every run is kept

Prompt history keeps each run for your plan’s history window, 90 days by default, with your place in each answer and the full answer one click away.

Who it names instead

“Who wins this prompt” lists the brands named for each prompt, their share of answers and their position, with a one-click toggle to track any of them as a competitor.

Competitor changes need no re-run

Add or remove a competitor and every figure, past runs included, recalculates instantly from the stored answers.

Methodology

How does Rankry measure Copilot visibility?

Copilot uses Azure GPT with Bing web search through Microsoft’s official API. Here is how each answer is produced and read.

  1. 01

    Prompt sent through Microsoft’s API

Each prompt goes to Azure GPT through Microsoft’s official API as its own request, exactly as written. No account and no chat history.

  2. 02

    Bing web search

The model answers with Bing web search, so the pages it can cite come from Bing’s index.

  3. 03

    Location for the search

For projects with a location, the country, state and city are passed to the search as an approximate location. Global projects send none.

  4. 04

One answer per prompt per run

Each prompt is asked once on each run. The trend comes from comparing runs over time.

  5. 05

    Brands and cited links read

A separate model lists the brands the answer named, in the order it ranked them, with its reasons. The links cited in the answer are stored as sources.

  6. 06

    Sentiment and full answer stored

Each answer is labelled Positive, Neutral or Negative from the claims it makes about you, and the full answer is stored for every run.

Prompts to monitor

Which prompts should I track in Copilot?

Track the questions a buyer asks before choosing, from short searches to full questions. Here is a set for our example brand UGC Planner, a deal tracker for UGC creators. Rankry writes a set like this from your site at onboarding, and you can add your own or import a CSV.

How to improve

How do I get named in Copilot answers?

Start with Bing, then do what helps on every engine: clear positioning, pages that answer the question, and mentions on the sites these answers cite.

  1. 01

Fix what stops AI from reading you

Run Rankry’s AI Readiness audit: 36 checks across crawl access, rendering, structured identity, content architecture, citation readiness and freshness, graded A to F. Content that only appears after JavaScript runs is hard for many AI crawlers to read.

  2. 02

Make sure Bing can index you

These answers search Bing, so the pages they can cite are pages in Bing’s index. Allow Bingbot in robots.txt, submit your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools, and check that your key pages are indexed there.

  3. 03

Say clearly what you do and for whom

Give each product and use case a page that states the category, the audience and the main alternatives in plain words. Answers repeat what they can find and confirm.

  4. 04

    Publish comparison and alternatives pages

Fair “X vs Y” and “alternatives to X” pages match the way buyers ask, and give the engine a source for exactly those prompts.

  5. 05

Earn mentions where the engine looks

Filter the Sources page to Copilot and turn on “Gap analysis only”. The review sites, forums and articles listed there cite competitors and not you.

  6. 06

Answer the question in the first lines

Lead with a direct answer, then the detail. Short definitions, FAQs and tables are easier to quote than long narrative.

  7. 07

    Keep key pages current

Show a visible update date and refresh pages when prices or features change. Outdated facts on your own site tend to reappear in answers.

  8. 08

    Work through the Action plan

Rankry orders the work in three steps: Fix your website, Win open questions, Beat your competitors. Add actions to Tasks, and draft pages for open questions in Content Studio.

Can you track brand mentions in Copilot?

Yes. In Rankry, Copilot uses Azure GPT with Bing web search through Microsoft’s official API. For every answer Rankry records whether your brand is named, your position, the sentiment, the links cited and the competitors named, and stores the full answer. Reports re-run automatically every day, or every 3 or 7 days if you choose, and every run is kept in prompt history.

Which plans include Copilot?

Copilot is an add-on on both plans: $25 a month on Base or $50 a month on Pro. It covers every prompt in your license.

How is Copilot different from ChatGPT in Rankry?

Both use GPT models, but Copilot runs on Azure and searches with Bing, while ChatGPT is asked through OpenAI’s API with OpenAI’s web search. The same prompt can name different brands, so Rankry keeps them separate, and the Model comparison table shows your numbers for each side by side.

Which sources does Copilot cite?

Rankry stores the links cited in each answer. Filter the Sources page to Copilot to see the domains cited in your current report, and which of them cite competitors and not you.

How do I improve my visibility in Copilot?

Start with Bing: let Bingbot crawl your key pages, submit your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools and check that the pages are indexed. Then publish clear category, comparison and alternatives pages, and earn mentions on the sites cited for your prompts. Rankry’s Action plan orders the work in three steps.

Can I see who Copilot recommends instead of me?

Yes. Each prompt’s “Who wins this prompt” panel lists the brands named, their share of answers and their position when named. You can add any of them to your competitors in one click, and all figures recalculate instantly from stored answers.

Does Rankry show the full Copilot answer?

Yes. The prompt panel shows “Full answer”, the verbatim reply, next to the brands in the order the answer ranked them, the reasons given and the links cited.

How often does Rankry check Copilot?

Reports re-run automatically every day, or every 3 or 7 days if you choose, and the dashboard shows when the next scan is due.
