GEO vs SEO: what’s different and what still matters
SEO earns you a place on a results page. GEO earns you a mention inside an AI answer. The groundwork overlaps more than the debate suggests; the differences are in what you measure and which sources count. Here is a side-by-side view and a plan for doing both.

Sample data
In short
GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the practice of getting AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews to name and cite your brand, while SEO is the practice of ranking pages on search engine results pages. The difference between SEO and GEO is mostly in the output and the measurement: SEO wins a click from a list of links, GEO wins a place inside the answer. Rankry measures the GEO side across up to nine AI surfaces.
Side by side
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
The two disciplines share foundations but aim at different outputs. This table compares them point by point.
| Aspect | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages high on search results pages | Get your brand named and your pages cited in AI-generated answers |
| Where it shows | Google, Bing and other search engines’ result lists | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Unit of work | Keywords | Prompts: full questions, often with context such as use case or location |
| What success looks like | A top position and a click | A place in the short list the answer gives, ideally near the top, with a link |
| Main metrics | Rankings, impressions, clicks, CTR, organic traffic | Visibility (share of answers naming you), position, share of voice, sentiment, citations |
| Technical basics | Crawlable, indexable, fast pages | The same, plus access for AI search crawlers and content that reads without JavaScript |
| Role of your own site | Central: your pages are what ranks | Important, but answers often draw on third-party pages about you |
| Role of third parties | Backlinks as a ranking signal | Reviews, forums, articles and lists as direct sources for the answer |
| Volatility | Rankings move, but a results page is fairly stable day to day | Answers to the same prompt can change from one run to the next |
| Typical tools | Rank trackers, Search Console, site crawlers | AI visibility trackers, AI crawler checks, citation analysis |
The overlap
Do GEO and SEO overlap?
Heavily. AI engines that search the web pull candidate pages from search indexes: Google’s own for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and other indexes for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Grok. A page that is not crawled and indexed can’t be retrieved. Google states that to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and that there are no additional technical requirements.
Good SEO content also tends to be good GEO content: pages that answer a specific question clearly, with headings that match how people ask, concrete details and evidence. What GEO adds is a stronger push on being quotable (answer first, sections that stand alone), on third-party presence, and on measuring answers rather than rankings.
So the practical answer to “do you need both” is yes, and most of the work is shared. A team already doing solid SEO is often a few changes away from a reasonable GEO baseline. The gap is usually in measurement and in third-party sources.
What changes
What does GEO require that SEO doesn’t?
These are the areas where GEO asks for something on top of a normal SEO program.
Access for AI crawlers
Search and retrieval agents such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot need to be allowed in robots.txt, decided separately from training crawlers.
Answer-first writing
Sections that answer a question in their first sentence and still make sense when quoted alone, without the rest of the page.
Third-party coverage
Reviews, community threads, comparison articles and directories, because AI answers often draw on them directly.
Entity clarity
A consistent description of who you are and what you do across your site and profiles, so engines place you in the right category.
Prompt tracking
Measuring answers to full questions across several engines, with repeated runs, instead of one rank per keyword.
Reading the answer
Checking what AI says about you, not just whether you appear, since a mention can be inaccurate or lukewarm.
Is SEO dead?
Is SEO dead because of AI search?
No. AI search features depend on search infrastructure. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search and use its index, and ChatGPT search and other assistants rely on crawlers and search providers too. If search systems can’t find your pages, AI engines can’t use them either.
What is changing is how much value a ranking alone delivers. When an AI answer satisfies the question, some people never click through to the results below it, so being named inside the answer becomes part of what “visible” means. SEO remains the foundation; GEO is the layer that checks whether that foundation turns into mentions.
Measurement
How do you measure GEO vs SEO success?
Use both sets of numbers. They answer different questions about the same goal: being found by buyers.
| Question | SEO metric | GEO metric |
|---|---|---|
| Are people finding us? | Impressions and average position in Search Console | Visibility: the share of AI answers that name you |
| Are we ahead of competitors? | Ranking comparisons on shared keywords | Share of voice against the competitors you track |
| Are we the top choice? | Positions 1 to 3 for priority keywords | Average position when named in answers |
| Are we getting visits? | Organic clicks and sessions | Referral visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and other AI domains |
| How are we described? | Title and snippet text | Sentiment and the full text of AI answers |
| Which pages work? | Top landing pages from organic search | Pages and domains AI cites as sources |

Doing both
How do I run GEO and SEO together?
You don’t need a separate team. Add GEO to the SEO process you already run.
- 01
Check AI crawler access
Review robots.txt for search and training bots and decide on each separately. Make sure key content renders without JavaScript.
- 02
Turn keywords into prompts
For each priority keyword, write the question a buyer would ask an assistant. Search Console queries phrased as questions are a good source.
- 03
Measure answers, not only rankings
Track those prompts across the AI engines your buyers use, against the same competitors, and watch the trend over several runs.
- 04
Rewrite key pages answer-first
Lead sections with the direct answer, add comparison tables and FAQs, and keep facts like pricing current.
- 05
Add third-party work to the plan
Alongside link building, get listed and reviewed on the sites AI cites for your prompts.
- 06
Report both together
Show organic traffic and AI visibility side by side, so you can see whether search gains turn into AI mentions.

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO aims to rank your pages on search results pages; GEO aims to get your brand named and your pages cited inside AI-generated answers. SEO is measured with rankings and clicks, GEO with the share of AI answers that name you, your position in them, and the sources they cite.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI engines that search the web depend on crawled, indexed pages, so SEO remains the foundation. GEO adds AI-specific work on top: access for AI crawlers, answer-first content, third-party coverage and tracking of answers.
Do I need both GEO and SEO?
Yes, if your buyers use both search engines and AI assistants, as many do. Most of the work overlaps, so you can extend your existing SEO process instead of starting a new one.
Does ranking on Google help you appear in ChatGPT?
Indirectly. ChatGPT finds pages through OpenAI’s own crawler and third-party search providers. The qualities that help a page rank, being crawlable, useful and well linked, also help it get found by those systems, but a Google ranking does not guarantee a ChatGPT mention.
Does ranking on Google help you appear in AI Overviews?
It helps. AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search and draw on Google’s index, and a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link. Google says there are no extra technical requirements, though it does not publish how supporting links are chosen.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
Close enough. AEO, answer engine optimization, came from featured snippets and voice search; GEO was coined for generative AI. Both aim at being the answer, and most people use the terms interchangeably today, along with LLMO and AI SEO.
How do you measure GEO?
Pick a fixed set of buyer prompts, run them across the AI engines your audience uses, and record whether you are named, your position, the competitors named and the sources cited. Repeat over time. Visibility, position, share of voice and sentiment are the core metrics.
Which shows results faster, SEO or GEO?
Neither is instant. Some GEO fixes, like allowing an AI search crawler or publishing a clear answer page, can show up once engines re-crawl. Earning third-party mentions is slow work, much like link building. In both, measure consistently and give changes time.
Can a small business do GEO without an agency?
Yes. Start by checking robots.txt, writing clear pages that answer your customers’ top questions, and collecting reviews on the platforms your category uses. Track a small set of prompts by hand or with a tool to see whether it is working.
Add the GEO numbers to your SEO reporting
Rankry shows how AI engines answer your buyers’ questions, who they name and which sources they cite.
