Google AI Mode rank tracking: see where AI Mode names your brand

AI Mode is Google’s conversational search: a full AI answer instead of a page of links. Rankry captures Google’s live AI Mode results for your prompts, from your project’s location, and records whether the answer names you, where you rank, which pages it references and which competitors it picks instead. Google AI Mode tracking is included on Pro or available for $20/month on Base.

Sample data

In short

Google AI Mode rank tracking is checking whether Google’s AI Mode names your brand when people search for what you sell, where you appear in the answer, and whether your pages are among its references. Rankry captures Google’s live AI Mode results through DataForSEO on desktop, from your project’s location, and stores the full answer, its references and the brands it names for every new run.

What it means

What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a search mode inside Google where the whole result is an AI-written answer. People open it from the AI Mode tab in Google Search, ask in full sentences and can follow up in the same thread. For a brand, visibility in AI Mode comes down to six things.

Mention

AI Mode names your brand in its answer. Visibility is the share of AI Mode answers to your prompts that do.

Position

Where you sit among the brands the answer names, in the order it presents them. #1 is the first brand named.

Reference

A page AI Mode links to as a source for its answer. Your site can be referenced while AI Mode recommends a rival, and you can be named without being referenced.

Sentiment

Whether the answer’s claims about you read Positive, Neutral or Negative, judged answer by answer.

Share of voice

Your mentions as a share of all mentions of you and the competitors you track in AI Mode answers.

Who wins the prompt

The brands AI Mode names instead of you, how often and in what position. Any of them can become a tracked competitor in one click.

Why Google AI Mode is different

What’s the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?

Both are Google, both are AI, and they are easy to confuse. They are separate surfaces that write separate answers, so Rankry tracks them separately. Its AI Mode data comes from Google’s AI Mode results, not from AI Overviews under another name. Google changes both products often; these are the differences as they stand.

A full answer, not a summary on top

AI Overviews add a short summary above the regular results for some searches. AI Mode replaces the results page with a longer, conversational answer that links to its sources.

Built for longer questions

People type fuller, more specific questions into AI Mode and can ask follow-ups in the same thread. Rankry records the first answer to each prompt; it does not continue the conversation.

Different answers, different sources

For the same question, AI Mode and AI Overviews can name different brands and reference different pages. Winning one tells you little about the other, which is why each has its own column in Rankry.

Same foundation: Google’s index

Both draw on pages Google has crawled and indexed. Normal Googlebot access and indexing are the starting point for each. There is no separate AI Mode crawler to allow, and Google-Extended does not control either.

What Rankry tracks

What does Rankry track in Google AI Mode?

Each run captures the AI Mode answer for every prompt you assign to it, then breaks the answer down so you can compare runs instead of re-searching by hand.

  • Whether AI Mode names your brand, prompt by prompt
  • Your position when you are named
  • Sentiment of every answer: Positive, Neutral or Negative
  • The brands AI Mode names instead of you, with its reasons
  • Every page AI Mode references in its answer
  • The full answer text for every new run
  • Every run kept in prompt history, per engine
  • Share of voice against your tracked competitors
  • Gaps turned into an Action plan and Tasks

Metrics

Where does my brand rank in Google AI Mode?

Position is your average rank among the brands an AI Mode answer names, and lower is better. Rankry reports it next to the numbers below, each readable for AI Mode alone or side by side with the other eight engines in the Model comparison table.

MetricWhat it meansWhy it matters
VisibilityShare of AI Mode answers to your prompts that name your brand. Each answer counts once, whatever your position in it.Your baseline. If the engine rarely names you, work on coverage before position or tone.
PositionYour average rank in AI Mode answers that name you. Lower is better: #1 means you are named first.People read answers top-down. Being the fifth of six brands rarely wins the click.
Share of voiceYour mentions divided by the mentions of you plus your tracked competitors. The Compete page can split it by engine.Shows whether you are gaining or losing ground against the specific brands you compete with.
SentimentShare of answers naming you whose claims about you read mostly positive. Every answer also gets a Positive, Neutral or Negative chip.A mention that comes with a caveat or an outdated fact can cost more than it earns.
DiversityHow many of the engines you run name you at least once, out of all engines run.Tells you whether AI Mode is one of the engines you are missing from, or one you already win.
SourcesThe domains AI Mode answers cite in your current report, typed You, Competitor, Review, Forum, Reference or Editorial, with status Yours, Gap or Mixed.Gap sources cite competitors and not you: a concrete list of places to earn a mention.

Monitoring over time

Why do AI Mode results change from one search to the next?

AI Mode writes a new answer for each search, from live results. The same question can get a different answer tomorrow, from another country or in another language. Tracking it means comparing like with like over time.

Live answers, written each time

AI Mode composes its answer when the search is made. New pages, fresh reviews and changes in Google’s systems can all change which brands it names and which pages it references.

One location and language per project

Answers differ between countries and languages. Rankry keeps each project on one location and language, so a change in your trend is a change in the answer, not in where it was asked from.

A steady schedule

Reports re-run automatically every day, or every 3 or 7 days if you choose, and new prompts are answered as soon as you add them.

Every run kept, side by side

Prompt history keeps each AI Mode answer for your plan’s history window, 90 days by default, with your position, the references and the full text, so you can see exactly what changed between two runs.

Methodology

How does Rankry track Google AI Mode?

Rankry captures AI Mode from Google itself. It requests Google’s live AI Mode results through DataForSEO, a search data provider, and reads the answer that comes back. Step by step:

  1. 01

Your prompt becomes a live AI Mode search

Each prompt you assign to AI Mode is sent as a live AI Mode request through DataForSEO’s SERP API. The answer is Google’s own, not a chat model imitating it.

  2. 02

    Desktop, from your project’s location

Requests run on desktop from the location set on your project: the country, or the state and country. Global projects are checked from the United States.

  3. 03

In the local language where mapped

For Austria, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland the request uses the local language. Other countries use English.

  4. 04

    The answer is kept whole

Rankry keeps the answer with its structure. When the provider’s parser drops the lists from an answer, Rankry rebuilds them from the captured page so ranked brands are not lost.

  5. 05

    Brands, position and references extracted

A separate model lists the brands AI Mode names in the order it presents them, with the reason given for each. The references in the answer are stored as sources and matched to brands by domain.

  6. 06

Sentiment and the full answer stored

Each answer gets a Positive, Neutral or Negative label from the claims it makes about you. The full answer is stored for every new run, labelled with its capture date, location, language and device.

  7. 07

    Retried, then counted

Failed requests are retried automatically, and failed answers are not charged to your monthly request pool. Successful answers feed visibility, position, share of voice and sentiment for AI Mode.

  8. 08

Kept apart from AI Overviews and Gemini

AI Mode has its own column in the Model comparison table, its own filter on the Sources page (labelled “AI Mode”) and its own answers in prompt history.

Prompts to monitor

Which prompts should I track in Google AI Mode?

Track the questions buyers type into AI Mode before they choose: longer and more specific than classic keywords, often with a comparison or a condition. Here is a set for our example brand UGC Planner, a deal tracker for UGC creators. Rankry writes a set like this from your site at onboarding, and you can add your own, import a CSV, and pick AI Mode for the prompts where it matters.

  1. 01What’s the best app for a UGC creator to track brand deals and payments?
  2. 02How do full-time UGC creators organize briefs, deadlines and invoices?
  3. 03Compare Collabstr, Billo and SproutUGC for a new UGC creator
  4. 04Is there a better way than Notion to manage UGC brand deals?
  5. 05How much should a UGC creator charge for usage rights?
  6. 06Best tools for UGC creators who work with 10 or more brands
  7. 07How do I follow up on a late payment from a brand as a UGC creator?

  9. 09Which UGC platforms take the smallest fee from creators?
  10. 10What should a UGC creator check in a brand contract?

How to improve

How do I rank in Google AI Mode?

Google’s guidance is that AI Mode needs no special optimization beyond what helps in Search: be crawlable, indexed and genuinely useful. These steps turn that into work you can track.

  1. 01

Make sure Google can index you

AI Mode draws on Google’s index, which Googlebot builds. Check key pages with URL Inspection in Rankry’s Search Console integration, up to 25 URLs at once: is the page on Google, when it was last crawled, and which canonical Google chose.

  2. 02

    Don’t rely on Google-Extended

Google-Extended is a robots.txt token for Gemini training and grounding, not a crawler for Search. Blocking or allowing it does not add you to AI Mode or remove you from it.

  3. 03

    Answer the whole question

AI Mode questions are longer and more specific than keywords. Pages that answer a full question directly, with the detail in clear sections, give it something to reference.

  4. 04

    Cover comparisons and alternatives

Questions like “X vs Y” and “alternatives to X” are where AI Mode names several brands. Fair comparison pages give it a source on your site for exactly those answers.

  5. 05

Earn references on the sites it uses

Filter the Sources page to AI Mode and turn on “Gap analysis only” to see the domains referenced in answers that name competitors and not you. The reviews, forums and articles there are your outreach list.

  6. 06

    Fix what blocks AI readers

Rankry’s AI Readiness audit runs 36 checks on your homepage, including robots.txt rules, pre-rendered content, structured data and update dates, and grades the result A to F.

  7. 07

Track the searches you already appear for

With Search Console connected, the Opportunities page lists Google searches you show up for that you don’t track yet. Add the ones that matter as prompts and pick AI Mode for them.

  8. 08

    Work through the Action plan

Rankry orders the work in three steps: Fix your website, Win open questions, Beat your competitors. Content Studio drafts the pages for open questions.

Questions

Google AI Mode tracking questions

Something missing? [email protected]

How do I track my brand in Google AI Mode?

Add the prompts your buyers ask, or let Rankry write them from your site, and pick Google AI Mode as one of the engines. Rankry requests Google’s live AI Mode answer for each prompt through DataForSEO, on desktop and from your project’s location, then records whether your brand is named, your position, the references and the sentiment, and stores the full answer. Reports re-run automatically every day, or every 3 or 7 days if you choose, and every run is kept in prompt history.

What’s the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are a short AI summary that Google shows above the regular results for some searches. AI Mode is a separate search mode, opened from its own tab, where the whole result is a longer conversational answer with links and room for follow-up questions. The two write different answers and can name different brands for the same question, so Rankry tracks them as two separate engines with their own columns, filters and history.

Is this real AI Mode data or AI Overviews relabelled?

Real AI Mode. Rankry requests Google’s AI Mode results specifically, through DataForSEO’s AI Mode endpoint, separately from the AI Overviews it captures from regular search results. Each AI Mode answer in prompt history shows when, where, in which language and on which device it was captured, and the full answer text is stored so you can read what AI Mode actually said.

Where does my brand rank in Google AI Mode?

Rankry reads each AI Mode answer and lists the brands it names in the order it presents them. Your position is your rank in that list, and the Position metric is your average rank across the AI Mode answers that name you, where lower is better. Answers that do not name you count toward Visibility (as not named) rather than Position, so the two numbers together show both how often and how high you appear.

Can I see which sources AI Mode cites?

Yes. Rankry stores the references in every AI Mode answer. Each answer in prompt history lists its sources next to the brands, and the Sources page, filtered to AI Mode, shows the domains referenced in your current report with their type (You, Competitor, Review, Forum, Reference, Editorial), their status (Yours, Gap or Mixed) and up to five top URLs per domain.

What is query fan-out in AI Mode?

Google has described AI Mode as breaking a question into several related searches and combining what it finds, a technique it calls query fan-out. Rankry does not show those background searches. It shows the result of them: the answer AI Mode gave, the brands it named in order and the pages it referenced, stored run by run.

Does AI Mode show up in Search Console?

Google includes traffic from its AI features in Search Console’s overall web search data, but Search Console does not show you the AI Mode answer, the brands it named or the pages it referenced. Rankry captures the answer itself. With the Search Console integration, on plans that include it, you can also check indexing with URL Inspection and find searches you appear for but do not track yet.

Why do AI Mode results change from one search to the next?

AI Mode writes each answer at the moment of the search, from live results, and the answer depends on location and language. New content, new reviews and changes in Google’s systems can shift which brands it names. Rankry asks from the same location and language on every run and keeps every answer, so you can tell a real change from a different place or phrasing.

Which plans and countries include Google AI Mode?

AI Mode tracking is included on Pro or available for $20/month on Base; engines your plan does not include are shown greyed out or blurred in the dashboard. It runs from the location on your project, in the local language for 12 countries and in English elsewhere, and Global projects are checked from the United States. It is not available for projects in Belarus, Iran or Russia, and onboarding warns you if you choose one of those countries.

Can I track AI Mode for a local business?

Yes, with one limit to know. AI Mode requests use your project’s country, or state and country; they are not set to a city or ZIP code. For local businesses Rankry writes many prompts with the location in the text, such as “best roofer in Austin”, which is how local intent reaches the answer. Tracked competitors with addresses can be shown on a map in the prompt panel. Rankry does not track Google Maps or local pack rankings.

How do I rank in Google AI Mode?

Start with what Google says AI Mode relies on: pages that Googlebot can crawl and index and that answer the question well. Check indexing with URL Inspection, publish pages that answer full questions and comparisons directly, and earn mentions on the review sites, forums and articles AI Mode references in your category. Rankry’s Action plan turns your AI Mode gaps into ordered tasks, and Content Studio drafts the pages.

Why don’t I see AI Mode in my dashboard?

There are three common reasons. Your plan may not include Google surfaces, in which case AI Mode appears greyed out or blurred. Your project may be set to Belarus, Iran or Russia, where Rankry gets no AI Mode data. Or your prompts may carry their own engine selection without AI Mode, since each prompt runs on the engines picked when it was added. New prompts added with AI Mode selected are answered right away.
