AI Volume

AI search volume for every prompt, with the method in plain sight

AI Volume estimates how much demand sits behind each prompt you track. It is counted from the questions people ask in Google’s “People also ask”, through DataForSEO, not from ChatGPT logs, and it sits next to Google search volume so you can compare the two.

Monthly estimates

In short

AI search volume is an estimate of how often people ask a question, used to judge which AI prompts carry real demand. Rankry’s AI Volume counts the questions people ask in Google’s “People also ask” results, using DataForSEO data, and shows a monthly estimate next to each prompt, beside Google search volume. It is not a count of ChatGPT prompts, and Rankry says so in the product.

The method

How is AI Volume calculated?

Four steps, with nothing hidden. At no point does Rankry claim to read what people type into ChatGPT.

  1. 01

    Map the prompt to searches

An AI model reduces each prompt to a short concept of two or three words, plus up to three exact searches and two broader ones. This step only turns the prompt into searchable phrases; it does not guess any numbers.

  2. 02

    Look up question demand

For those phrases, Rankry fetches AI search volume from DataForSEO. That figure is built from the questions people ask in Google’s “People also ask” boxes.

  3. 03

Take the largest, never a sum

The prompt shows the largest monthly value across its exact phrasings. Values are never added up, so overlapping phrasings can’t inflate the figure.

  4. 04

    Refresh on a schedule

Values refresh every 30 days, and whenever prompts are generated, imported or edited. When the estimate is zero, the cell shows N/A.

Two columns, two sources

AI Volume vs Google search volume: what’s the difference?

Both columns sit next to each prompt on the Prompts page and are visible by default. They come from different data and answer different questions.

Both are estimates measured with English-language keyword data. Neither counts how often anyone typed your exact prompt into an AI assistant.

The honest answer

How many people ask ChatGPT about my topic?

Nobody outside the AI companies can count that precisely. OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and the others don’t publish how often a given question is asked. Any figure labeled as ChatGPT or prompt volume is an estimate, built from panels, models or proxies.

Rankry uses a proxy you can check: question demand from Google’s “People also ask”. The questions people ask Google and the questions they ask an AI assistant tend to share topics and wording, which makes question demand a fair way to compare one prompt with another, even though it isn’t a count of AI chats.

So read AI Volume as relative, not absolute. A prompt showing 1,300 is likely to matter more than one showing 90. How many people asked ChatGPT that exact question last month is not something AI Volume claims to know, and the column’s tooltip in the product says the same.

Putting it to work

How should I use AI Volume to choose prompts?

AI Volume is most useful for comparing prompts with each other. These are the jobs it does well.

Rank your prompts by demand

When you trail in many prompts, start with the ones where AI Volume is highest. That is where a win reaches the most people.

Review a new batch

After you import or add prompts, compare their AI Volume. Keep the phrasings with demand, and think twice about near-duplicates that show N/A.

Choose what to write first

Combine AI Volume with your visibility. A prompt with real demand where AI doesn’t name you is a strong candidate for new content.

Spot question-style demand

When AI Volume is high and Google volume is low, people ask about the topic as a question more than they search it as a keyword. Those prompts suit FAQ-style content.

Keep expectations honest

Use AI Volume to prioritize, not to forecast traffic. It estimates interest in a question, not clicks to your site.

Check your market

Values are measured for your project’s country. Global projects show Google volume worldwide, but AI Volume is unavailable for them.

From keyword list to prompts

How do I turn keywords into AI prompts?

Most teams start from a keyword list. Turning it into prompts takes a few minutes, and AI Volume then shows which versions carry demand.

  1. 01

    Start from the decision

Take a keyword such as “ugc deal tracker” and ask what the person is trying to decide. That decision is your prompt.

  2. 02

Write it the way buyers ask

Phrase it as someone would type it into ChatGPT: “What’s the best app for UGC creators to track brand deals?” Leave your brand name out, so the prompt shows whether AI finds you on its own.

  3. 03

    Add a few variants

Write the question two or three ways: a comparison, a “best for” question, a how-to. Each one is a separate prompt.

  4. 04

    Add them to Rankry

Paste them into the Add prompts window, one per line, or import a CSV. They are answered right away.

  5. 05

    Compare the demand

When AI Volume and Volume arrive, keep the variants with demand and the ones that match how your buyers talk.

Reading the column

Why does a prompt show N/A or no AI Volume?

An empty cell is not an error. These are the common reasons, and what to do about each.

ReasonWhat it meansWhat to do
No measurable demandThe estimate is zero for every exact phrasing, so the cell shows N/AKeep the prompt if it matches how your buyers talk. Demand data misses many niche questions.
A very specific promptLong, detailed prompts can map to phrases with too little dataTrack a shorter variant of the same question too, and compare.
A Global projectAI Volume is “unavailable for this project location” when the project has no countryGoogle volume is still shown, measured worldwide.
A non-English promptVolume is measured with English-language keyword dataExpect low values or N/A, and judge these prompts on visibility instead.

Clear limits

What doesn’t AI Volume measure?

Being clear about the limits is what makes the number usable. AI Volume is none of the following.

  • A count of ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude prompts
  • The number of times your exact prompt was asked
  • A sum across phrasings that would double-count demand
  • A forecast of traffic to your site
  • A figure for Global projects, which have no country to measure in
  • Part of the Opportunities demand score, which uses citations and Google volume

Questions

AI Volume questions

Something missing? [email protected]

What is AI search volume?

AI search volume is an estimate of how often people ask a question, used to compare the demand behind AI prompts. In Rankry, AI Volume is a monthly estimate for each prompt, counted from questions in Google’s “People also ask” through DataForSEO.

Where does Rankry’s AI Volume data come from?

From DataForSEO’s AI search volume data, which is built from the questions people ask in Google’s “People also ask” boxes. An AI model first maps each prompt to a few short searches; the volume itself comes from DataForSEO, not from the model.

Is AI Volume the number of times people asked ChatGPT?

No. It is counted from questions in Google’s “People also ask”, not inside ChatGPT or Gemini, and it is not the number of times your exact prompt was asked. The product’s tooltip says this too. Use it to compare prompts with each other.

How accurate is AI Volume?

It is an estimate, and best read as relative. It is measured at country level with English-language data and refreshed every 30 days. A prompt with ten times the AI Volume of another very likely has more demand behind it; the exact figure is a guide, not a count.

Does Google search volume predict AI prompt volume?

Only loosely. Some topics are mostly typed as short keywords, others mostly asked as questions. Rankry shows Google volume and AI Volume side by side so you can see where they agree, and where question-style demand is stronger than keyword demand.

How often is AI Volume updated?

Every 30 days, and also when prompts are generated, imported or edited. It follows its own cycle, separate from your visibility runs.

Why does my Global project show AI Volume as unavailable?

AI Volume is measured per country, so a project with no country has nothing to measure against. Google search volume is still shown for Global projects, measured worldwide.

Why is AI Volume higher than Google volume for some prompts?

The two numbers come from different data. AI Volume reflects questions people ask; Google volume reflects searches people type. A topic people usually phrase as a question can show more AI Volume than search volume, and the reverse happens for short, keyword-style topics.

Can I see AI Volume for prompts I don’t track yet?

AI Volume is shown for the prompts in your project, so add an idea as a prompt to measure it. To find Google searches you already appear for but don’t track, connect Search Console and use the Search Console block on the Opportunities page, on plans that include the integration.
