In short

AI share of voice is your brand’s share of mentions in AI answers, counted among you and a set of competitors, not every brand the answers name. In Rankry it is the number of answers that name you divided by the total mentions of you and your tracked competitors, so the shares of all tracked brands add up to 100%. You see it on the dashboard and, broken down by engine, on the Compete page.

The formula, worked through

How do you calculate share of voice in AI answers?

Share of voice divides each brand’s mentions by the mentions of every brand you track, you included. In this example, 50 prompts on five engines give 250 answers in one run.

BrandAnswers that name itShare of voiceVisibility (of all 250 answers)
Notion8585 ÷ 220 = 39%34%
UGC Planner (you)6060 ÷ 220 = 27%24%
Collabstr4545 ÷ 220 = 20%18%
SproutUGC3030 ÷ 220 = 14%12%
Total220 mentions100%—

Share of voice uses the 220 mentions of tracked brands as its base, so it always adds up to 100%. Visibility uses all 250 answers as its base, so it does not. Sample data.

Pick the right metric

Share of voice vs visibility: which should I watch?

Both count mentions, but they answer different questions. Rankry shows them side by side, along with position.

Visibility

The share of all answers that name you. It answers “how often does AI mention us at all?” and moves only when your own mentions change.

Share of voice

Your share of the mentions among you and your tracked competitors. It answers “are we winning against these rivals?” and moves when you or they gain or lose mentions.

Position

Your average rank in the answers that name you. Two brands with the same share of voice can differ a lot here.

Why use all three

Visibility can rise while share of voice falls, if a competitor grows faster. Watching both tells you whether growth is yours or the whole category’s.

Where do I see share of voice in Rankry?

Share of voice appears in two places, and the Compete page puts it next to the other competitive views.

Engine by engine

Why is my share of voice different in ChatGPT and Perplexity?

Each engine builds answers its own way. They search different indexes, trust different sources and write lists of different lengths. A brand that is well covered on review sites and forums may do well in engines that lean on those sources, and poorly in one that favors publishers or official sites.

That is why Rankry lets you filter share of voice by engine. If a competitor leads in Perplexity but not in ChatGPT, open the Perplexity answers for the prompts it wins and look at the sources. The gap usually points to specific pages: a comparison article, a review profile or a roundup you are missing from.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode add another layer, because they sit inside Google Search and draw on the pages Google already knows. Your share there can move with your Google presence as much as with your reputation in chat engines.

Benchmarks that hold up

How do I judge whether my share of voice is good?

There is no industry-wide benchmark for AI share of voice, because every brand tracks a different set of rivals. These four checks work for any category.

Compare with your fair share

Divide 100% by the number of brands you track. With you and three competitors, a fair share is 25%. Above it, AI names you more than your average rival.

Look at the gap to the leader

The Compete page’s “Gap to leader” shows how far you are from the most visible tracked brand on each metric, and names your biggest gap.

Check it engine by engine

A healthy overall share can hide an engine where you barely appear. Filter by engine before you draw conclusions.

Watch the direction

A share that rises over several runs means you are taking mentions from rivals. A flat share while your visibility grows means the whole category is growing with you.

From number to action

How do I increase my AI share of voice?

Share of voice rises when AI names you in answers where it used to name a rival. These steps find those answers and help you win them.

  1. 01

    Track the right rivals

Rankry picks competitors from your first report. Add brands that keep appearing in your answers, and remove ones that don’t compete for your customers.

  2. 02

    Find where they win

Use Head-to-head and Category battleground on the Compete page to see the prompts and categories where a rival beats you.

  3. 03

    Read the answers they win

Open those prompts and read the answers and sources. Note what the engines credit the winner for.

  4. 04

    Close source gaps

On the Sources page, turn on “Gap analysis only” to see domains AI cites in answers that name competitors but not you.

  5. 05

    Work through the plan

The Action plan turns this into steps: fix your website, win open questions, beat your competitors. Content Studio drafts the pages.

  6. 06

    Measure over periods

Compare 30-day and 90-day share of voice. A shift that holds over several runs is real.

What gets counted

Should share of voice count mentions, citations or recommendations?

Rankry’s share of voice counts mentions: an answer that names a brand counts once for that brand, whether it lists it first or fifth. Position is measured separately, as your average rank when named, so you can see both how often and how high.

Citations are a different signal. A citation is a link to a page the engine used, which may be yours, a competitor’s, a review site’s or a forum thread. Rankry shows citations on the Sources page, where each domain is marked “Yours”, “Gap” or “Mixed”.

A recommendation is the strongest kind of mention, usually one of the first brands named. To see how often you are the top pick, read your Position next to share of voice, and check “Who wins this prompt” for the prompts that matter most.

AI share of voice questions

What is a good AI share of voice?

It depends on how many competitors you track and how crowded your category is. With four tracked brands, an even split is 25% each, so anything above that means AI names you more than your average rival. More useful than any fixed target are your own trend and your gap to the leader.

Is share of voice calculated for my whole market?

No. Rankry counts you and the competitors you track, so the number shows how you compare with that set. Other brands the answers name still appear in “Who wins this prompt”, and you can add any of them as a competitor.

Why is my share of voice empty?

Share of voice needs at least one tracked competitor. Rankry picks competitors automatically from your first report, once every engine has answered. You can also add brands that appeared in your reports from Settings → Competitors or from a prompt’s panel.

How many competitors can I track?

The number is set by your plan. The share of voice card and Settings → Competitors both show how many you track and how many more your plan allows.

Does adding a competitor change my past share of voice?

Yes, instantly. Rankry stores every answer and the brands it named, so adding or removing a competitor recalculates share of voice for your whole history without re-running anything. A brand only counts in answers that actually named it.

How many prompts do I need for a reliable share of voice?

More prompts give a steadier number. A share built on a handful of prompts can swing when one answer changes. Every Rankry project keeps at least 10 prompts running; a broader set on several engines gives a steadier share, especially when you look at one engine at a time.

Can I see share of voice per AI engine?

Yes. The Share of voice block on the Compete page has an engine filter: “All providers”, or ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Meta Muse, AI Overviews, AI Mode or Copilot one at a time, depending on your plan.

Does AI share of voice correlate with traffic?

Not directly. Share of voice measures how often AI names you, not how many people click through. To see visits that AI engines send to your site, AI Traffic on Pro counts visits referred by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok and other assistants.

Does share of voice include Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Yes, on Pro or with the Google add-ons on Base. Brands named in AI Overviews and AI Mode answers count like any other engine’s mentions, and the engine filter on the Compete page lets you look at each Google surface on its own.

What period does share of voice cover?

The period you pick: last 7, 30 or 90 days, last 12 months or a custom range, trimmed to your plan’s history. It includes every answer from every run in that window.
